Oly Pipe Spots on the Line Quals lead to Final Pipe Selections Breckenridge, Colorado - January 12, 2002
Shaun White (San Diego, CA) and Kelly Clark (Mount Snow, VT) led qualifying Saturday in the Chevy Truck U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix. Sunday's finals are the final of five Olympic qualifiers. White posted a 43.40 on his first of two runs to qualify first. He was followed by '98 Olympian Todd Richards (Encinitas, CA) with a 42.60 and Tommy Czeschin (Mammoth Lakes, CA) with a 42.40.
Clark won with a 45.70 and got a perfect 10.00 in amplitude in her first run. Shannon Dunn (Carnelian Bay, CA), another '98 Olympian, was 2nd with a 38.20 and Barrett Christy (Vail, CO), another Olympian, was 3rd with a 36.70.
The only man to secure a spot after four qualifiers is 1998 Olympic medalist Ross Powers (South Londonderry, VT). The other two men's spots all come down to Sunday's finals, with Czeschin, Keir Dillon (East Stroudsburg, PA), Andy Finch (Fresno, CA), Danny Kass (Hamburg, NJ), Richards, JJ Thomas (Golden, CO), White and Luke Wynen (Mammoth Lakes, CA) all having a chance. A fourth men's halfpipe spot could be named after selections for the parallel giant slalom are completed Jan. 24. The men's race is tight as four different riders have won the first four of five qualifying events. Kass and Wynen both won at Mammoth, Powers won last week at Mount Bachelor in Oregon and Czeschin won Thursday at Breckenridge. On the women's side, Dunn and Clark have secured Olympic Team spots. The third and final spot will be filled by either veteran Tricia Byrnes (Stratton Mountain, VT) or Gretchen Bleiler (Snowmass Village, CO). In other words, whoever finishes better Sunday will be going to Park City in February. Bleiler was 4th today while Byrnes was 5th.
