Athlete's Voice: Todd Mason Pushing What Can and Cannot be Ridden Chamonix, France- October 9, 2002
MZ: So you rode it smooth to the bottom?
Yeah - I got some nice turns after the bergshrund, then the snow began to get softer as I dropped in elevation, so I took off. I took off by myself. By the time I got to the base of the mountain, my head was thumping. I had to lie down, so I crossed the glacier by myself. I didn't have the energy to hang on and wait. I had to keep going. They were about an hour or so behind me, and waiting could have put me in a dangerous situation, so I went for it alone. I'm so stoked I stuck it - it was the burliest thing I've ever done in my life.
MZ: Did Stian and Xandi make it back?
Yep - they descended the climbing route. It turned out to be a good route for them because they could make tight turns. When they arrived back at camp we had a bit of a celebration, ate like animals and drank like never before. Then we slept for a good 10 hours and headed out, met up with the sherpas about halfway down and rallied it back.
MZ:
So while you were on that face, if you'd have missed by a millimeter, it'd all been over. What do you learn from moments like that you use in every day life?
